I have always described myself as a non-political person. It seemed to be an untouchable realm and right or wrong, a realm not privy to me. My parents exercised their right to vote but we didn’t discuss politics at home. I remember as a family discussing what we needed to do regardless of politics. We discussed working harder and not necessarily getting involved in the political rhetoric even if things said felt wrong.
For years, I was an educator by-stander and fell in the trap of complaining about what was done to us legislatively and just continued to work hard regardless of the political rhetoric. As I have become more involved with my principal professional organization, I quickly realized the political rhetoric I speak of is not always in the best interest of our children. In my experiences speaking to legislators, I realized many do not hear our stories. In my experiences speaking to legislators, I realized many do not know our day to day experiences.
You and only you can show your voice. You and only you can advocate and tell your story as an educator in Texas. Your vote is your voice and your voice is powerful. Please take the time to vote and speak up for our profession and more importantly, our children.
